From the classical repertoire to contemporary sculpt and strength. Beginner to advanced, taught with precision by instructors certified in the method.

Mat Pilates

Boston

I have taken Pilates for years at other studios and no one has ever explained what my ribs or my shoulders were supposed to be doing. One class here changed how I move through all of it. Precise, hard, and never rushed.

"The instructors here actually teach."

Classical mat is the hardest class I take and it looks like the simplest one from the outside. Ten repetitions done correctly is much harder than twenty done quickly, and you feel the difference the next day. I book it first every week.

"you feel the difference the next day"

Every exercise comes from the original method, taught by instructors certified in it. The sequence varies, the repertoire does not. The work is centering: the deep abdominals, the pelvic floor, the muscles that hold your lumbar spine in place while your limbs do something difficult. Ten repetitions done correctly instead of twenty done fast. This is the hardest Pilates there is, because you are the only resistance available.

Classical Mat

Classical exercises taken apart and resequenced, with magic circles, loop bands and the ball. Every prop increases demand rather than reducing it: the circle asks the adductors and lats to hold tension through a whole exercise, the band turns your own limb into resistance. Same principles as everything else we teach, harder route through them. You will recognize the exercises and not recognize what they do to you.

Mat Remix

Standing work, squats and lunges, and sustained load through the glutes, quads and hamstrings until they shake. That shaking is motor unit fatigue, not weakness, and it happens because the muscle is under tension long enough to run out. Then the smaller work: obliques, triceps, the deep stabilizers, moved in every direction and lowered slowly, which is the part you feel for two days. Weights are the mechanism, not the class. Breath and control run underneath all of it, the same way they do in every other class here, which is why a five pound weight stops feeling like five pounds.

Yes. Mandatory. We sell cute ones, but the pair from the trampoline park in your junk drawer is fine. On the mat they matter more than you’d think, because half the work is your feet staying exactly where you put them.

Yes. Pilates was meant to be done three or four times a week, and almost nobody can afford to do reformer that often. Mat can. It is also the harder of the two, because the springs on a reformer are there to help you and on the mat nothing is. Add sculpt for the same repertoire with weights. The reformers are in Newton, and there is one in Boston for privates.

Yes. We kept one reformer for exactly this. Privates are the one place the springs still make sense, so if you want reformer work in Boston, that’s where it lives. We also do mat privates, which are the fastest way to fix something specific, because there’s nothing between you and the work. Email boston@kinkpilates.com and we’ll get you on the schedule.

Any of them. There’s no order, no prerequisite, and no beginner tier hiding somewhere. All three formats pull from the same repertoire and every one of them is taught to the room, so the difficulty is set by what your instructor gives you, not by which class you picked. Take the one that fits your Tuesday.

On the reformer, springs help you. On the mat, nothing does. Same exercises, same order, same principles, but you are the only resistance in the room. Joe Pilates built the reformer so people could do the mat work better, which tells you which one came first.

No. Ask anyone who came in assuming that. The springs are not there to make it hard, they are there to help you, and without them your deep abdominals have nowhere to hide.

You’ll know the names and you’ll be surprised by the work. The hundred is the hundred. It just costs more.

No. We have mats, props, magic circles, weights, and everything else the class needs. Bring the socks and yourself.

Something you can move in and something that stays put when you’re upside down. Fitted is better than loose. No jeans, no zippers, no necklaces. Ask us about the necklace stories sometime.

Depends on the class:

CLASSICAL • MAT is the mat and your own body.
MAT • SCULPT adds light weights, and light is doing real work in that sentence.
MAT • REMIX brings in props and moves faster.

Two or three times a week is where people start noticing things. It’s low impact, so if your body wants more, come more.

This is for people who want to learn how their body works. You do not need abs, flexibility, or a plan. You need to show up and let your instructor tell you what to do.

Tell your instructor before class, not after. Every one of our teachers is certified in the classical method and knows how to change an exercise without turning it into nothing. If it’s a recent surgery or an acute injury, text us first and we’ll tell you honestly whether to start in a private.
